William Applebaum

President 1947-1948 (Founder of Market Geography)

William Applebaum, a Russian native was born on April 24, 1906.  Following his arrival to the Untied States with his family in 1920, Applebaum received his baccalaureate degree from the University of Minnesota in 1931 and completed his graduate studies at this same university as well as the University of Ohio in 1933 and 1932, respectively.

In 1933, Applebaum began his career as a Market Research Analyst for Kroger, Co. in Cincinnati, Ohio before moving east five years later to Boston, MA.  For the next forty years, Applebaum held many positions at Stop and Shop, Inc. in Boston beginning with Director of Marketing Research Department through Director of Geographic Research until his retirement in 1978.

William Applebaum was an active member of the American Marketing Association.  Following his presidency on the AMA Boston Chapter from 1947 to 1948, he was also the Director of AMA National, 1956-1958, and the Chairman of Publications Policy and Review Board, 1958-1959.  He was also a member of the Association of American Geographers, American Geographical Society, and the American Statistical Association, as well as other nationally recognized organizations dedicated to the advancement of science.

William Applebaum is well known as the “Founder of Market Geography.”  His research into the relationships between an organization’s territorial spaces, ranging from the actual institutions to where its clients and suppliers are situated, currently assists market researchers in identifying optimal distribution channels and recognizing consumer needs.  His studies had a profound impact on the food distribution and retail industries.  William Applebaum is one of the founders of the Food Distribution Research Society, whose mission is to further the research and discussion of this industry, and each year a William Applebaum Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a graduate student to honor his dedication to this field of study.

William Applebaum has wrote and contributed to over seventy articles published in Institute of Industrial Marketing, Chain Store Age, Professional Geographer, and Super Market Institute, to name a few.  He received the American Marketing Association National Award in 1950 and the Association of American Geographers Citation of Merit in 1959. William Applebaum died in 1979.
